Women Don't Deserve Respect

Susan Boyle is ugly. That is why people are so fascinated by her.

She is older than my mom and has at least two chins, awkward giggles, and even more awkward hip gyrations. How dare she dream of commanding an audience’s attention? When she walks on stage, let’s just laugh and hope she leaves.

Wait! Don’t tell me that beautiful voice is coming from her chubby face! How does she do it? Susan Boyle, the virgin for reasons of ugliness, can sing better than a fit young man who wears gel in his hair, or a tight young woman who fake tans. I’m not saying that she IS better than those attractive people, but she can sing.

Her song is ending. I guess I’ll stand and clap for the woman (I mean “woman” in the toothless-grandma-who-wears-moth-eaten-dresses way). Good for her! She overcame such adversity and dared to show her hideous face on television, all for the sake of her pipe dream.

Before today, I didn’t know ugly people had dreams. Don’t they look in the mirror and see that they are just not meant to be taken seriously? I hope Susan Boyle doesn’t think she’s going to win anything until she fixes her face. Surely she knows that going under the knife would broaden her fan base! Are those chins even fixable? At the very least she should change her name.

Let’s get real, a voice isn’t enough to overshadow Boyle’s looks, right? At least with a recording contract we don’t have to see her again.

Well, I want to feel good about my life so I’m going to root for Boyle. I’m going to clap for the underdog, cheer for the little people and all that crap. It’ll help me get into heaven or something. Yeah, you go girl, do the impossible! Because, lets face it, an unattractive old woman winning a popular talent show is just impossible.

Speaking of impossible things, lets talk about women in the military. Do they really expect to be taken seriously. They are weak and small and can't fight as well as men.

What do they want from a bunch of guys who haven't had ass in months? Surely they understand their duty, to offer a little sexual relief to those tired boys.

In this world, the Taliban can rape girls in Afghanistan if they don't cover their ankles. Women shouldn't expect to get married if they can't cook and they should grin and bear men's lewd comments because their breasts can be used to get free drinks.

Whatever.

so first of all, all the women in the military stuff is not news to me, but i hadn't read the clip from bbc news that you linked. i want to vomit.

secondly, the whole susan boyle thing also makes me want to vomit. and not just because people judged her so intensely before hearing her sing, and certainly many people only root for her because she's not exactly the industry standard for a popular singer. what really gets me is that she's actually not that great a singer. i don't watch things like american idol or britain's got talent or whatever, because as a voice teacher i pick everybody apart and just get angry haha. but seriously, if she were good looking, with a voice like that, she wouldn't have gotten much praise. simon probably would've told her that her vibrato sounds unnatural or something. she's only a sensation because she's *not* beautiful to look at, and people may think, "wow, she's pretty good, considering how bad she looks..." the word "considering" is the kicker.

ok i'll stop my rant. i love you! :)

I agree 100% about Susan Boyle. This obsession with her stems from our culture's materialistic views of women and the world. The only reason she is getting so much attention is because of the way she looks and I'm horrified at the way the media is scooping her up. It's definitely a time when I look at the industry I work in and shake my head at the way they are parading this woman around like a circus attraction. Frankly, it's sad that this is what becomes a youtube sensation and featured on every major news network. Not what happens to women in the war or Afghanistant or anywhere in the world. truthfully. Instead it's all about a homely woman with a voice that contradicts her looks.

First to your comments.

1. Thank you.

2. Yes I think you are both correct and another one I was thinking is that by taking certain amount of currency out of circulation could be bad, but I don't mean that the money should be taken out of circulation. So first simply to your theoretical argument from your father, I would simply ask him if he spends every dime he makes, or does he save in case of emergencies?

Now to your old post, though I'm confused why you removed your newer post.

So body image is always a very curious question, now let's just say that the genetic predisposition of weight follows a bell curve, but because of media intervention and foods that are affordable, the distribution is considerably flattened, showing the increase number of over weight and under weight individuals. Idol competitions in general are the antithesis of healthy body images of women, which really should be at the peak of a normal represented from a standard genetic distribution (assuming that through evolution a majority of humans have the most efficient and healthy genetic body mass type (this is highly likely to be flawed)). Now the thing is most idol competitions aren't just about singing, but they are about image, so it is in my opinion for that reason surprising that they let her get through to TV, but it is obvious that they decided that this would be an interesting publicity stunt for a show that is obviously waning. Idols are performers, never the best in a field and are just publicity items, as such it works that which ever will sell the most is what wins, not the best singer, not the best looking, but the one who will generate the most dollars, since they have so effectively succeeded in making her a sensation they will be able to make money off of a none traditional person, no worries that she isn't the best singer or performed, but she will sell the most as of now.

Everyone knows that in the arts and media rarely does the best win, rather it is the one who will bring in money, this is perhaps the cynical way to look at things though.
